Study Shows CeraLyte Relieves Children's Seizures Baltimore, MD (December 1, 2004)--A study of three children in the Mallow family of Florida, who suffer from Familial Dysautonomia (FD) -- a Jewish genetic disease with symptoms including seizures, developmental delays, lack of tears, feeding problems and a tendency to develop pneumonia from food aspiration in the lungs--showed favorable results when the children were treated with the rice-based oral rehydration solution (ORS) CeraLyte, produced by Maryland biotech company Cera Products of Columbia, MD. The children drink three liters per day (each) of CeraLyte-90, which induced freedom from the seizures and normalization of EEG (a test to detect abnormalities in electrical activity in the brain) in all three patients. The studys author, Dr. Juan G. Ochoa of the University of Florida, concluded the combination therapy of Topamax and CeraLyte may play a role in prevention and control of seizures due to Familial Dysautonomia. One in 30 persons of Ashkenazi Jewish origin carries a genetic mutation for
the FD gene, almost as high as the incidence of Tay Sachs Disease. FD is
a disorder of the autonomic and sensory nervous systems, which prevents
the body
from regulating itself, along with inability to feel pain, temperature
sensations, and trouble chewing, swallowing and digesting food. When FD children
catch
a cold or get upset, their systems are unable to regulate themselves. Their
GI tracts shut down, causing blood sugar drops or electrolyte imbalance
and seizures.. Cera Products Press Contact Charlene Riikonen Cera Products Inc. Established in Maryland in 1993, Cera Products
