Columbia, MD., Cera Products has donated over $140,000 in oral rehydration products to Child Health Foundation and Direct Relief International. These life-saving medications have been distributed to locally managed health facilities and organizations in 19 countries.

Among the oral rehydration products donated includes CeraLyte and CeraSport ready-to-drink oral rehydration products (ORS), made by Cera Products, a long-standing supporter of Direct Relief’s emergency response work. Oral rehydration products are one of the most requested items during emergencies, when water supplies are compromised. Dehydration can become fatal if not treated. CeraLyte rice-based ORS has the same salt concentration as the WHO ORS; Cera Products has provided CeraLyte and CeraSport ORS to help with medical needs following disasters in many countries, including El Salvador, Guatemala, Pakistan, China and, most recently, Zimbabwe. CeraLyte is primarily for diarrheal-disease outbreaks while CeraSport ORS is appropriate for influenza and fever as well as mild dehydration.

Direct Relief is dispatching a second round of aid for residents of Baja California affected by Hurricane Jimena in early September. Aeromedicos, a Direct Relief partner, is airlifting the donated products to Mexico. Homes, schools, medical facilities, and roads have been severely damaged and wells have been tainted, leaving residents in great need.

"During disaster situations dehydration can become a serious and all too common occurrence,” said Charlene Riikonen, Cera Product’s president. “Our company always strives to provide help in situations where we know our products can make a difference.”
