HOWARD
COUNTY COMPANY, CERA PRODUCTS, DONATES ORAL REHYDRATION DRINK "CERALYTE" TO SAVE HAITIAN VICTIMS' LIVES
Columbia, MD (January 19, 2010) - Cera Products, a member of the Howard Technology Council, donated its signature product, CeraLyte, to the Child Health Foundation for Direct Relief
International to send to Haiti for medical help following the January 12 earthquake.
Cera Products donated ten pallets with 9,000 liters of the highly effective, rice-based oral electrolyte drink. CeraLyte restores essential life-giving electrolytes and fluids lost during vomiting and diarrhea, which often happens during a disaster such as
the earthquake in Haiti.
"CeraLyte's formulation of long-chain carbohydrates provides calories and energy as well as the needed electrolytes for reducing the severity of a diarrheal illness and promoting recovery," says Charlene Riikonen, President of Columbia, MD based Cera Products.
"A healthy adult can die from some diarrheal illnesses, such as cholera, within hours; a weakened child or elderly family member can die in as little as two hours, and just one liter of CeraLyte can save a life!"
Cera's products are based on research by Johns Hopkins' physicians who have worked, along with Riikonen, at the International Centre for Diarrheal Disease in Bangladesh which won the Gates award for global health several years ago for its discovery of oral
rehydration solutions.
